Information on vaccination for Japanese encephalitis

Japanese encephalitis vaccination is a vaccination that prevents infection by using a dry cell culture Japanese encephalitis vaccine.
Since June 2009, the current Japanese encephalitis vaccine uses a dry cell culture Japanese encephalitis vaccine manufactured using Vero cells instead of mouse brain.

Important Notices

Due to the nationwide shortage of vaccine supply, individual notification of Japanese encephalitis 2nd stage will not be implemented in the 3rd year of Reiwa.

Due to manufacturing problems of Japanese encephalitis vaccine, there is a nationwide shortage of supply of Japanese encephalitis vaccine. In order to prioritize the inoculation of the first stage of Japanese encephalitis according to the instructions of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, we will not carry out individual notification of the second stage of Japanese encephalitis (sent just before the 9th birthday) in the 3rd year of Reiwa. Individual notifications will be given to the subjects in the 4th year of Reiwa, when the supply of Japanese encephalitis vaccine is expected to recover.

The vaccination period for those born between April 2, 1995 and October 1, 2009, who missed the opportunity to vaccinate against Japanese encephalitis, has been relaxed.

  • For those born on April 2, 1995 to April 1, 2007 who missed the vaccination opportunity, the shortage can be inoculated at public expense until the age of 20.
  • If you were born on April 2, 2007 to October 1, 2009 and have not been vaccinated the prescribed number of times during the period of the target age of the 1st term, during the period of the target age of the 2nd term (9) Uninoculated portion can be inoculated to (aged to under 13 years old).

As for the vaccination against Japanese encephalitis, we did not actively recommend Japanese encephalitis from 2005 to 2009 because there was a case of serious illness after vaccination. Since then, a new vaccine has been developed, and now you can get vaccinated against Japanese encephalitis as usual.

Symptoms of Japanese encephalitis

It is caused by infection with Japanese encephalitis virus. The virus that has increased in pigs, not directly from humans, is transmitted and transmitted by Culex tritaenior.
The incubation period is 7 to 10 days, resulting in acute encephalitis with symptoms such as high fever, headache, vomiting, impaired consciousness and convulsions. In addition to encephalitis, some people end up with meningitis and summer cold-like symptoms. The mortality rate when suffering from encephalitis is about 20-40%, but many people have neurological sequelae. Recently, about 10 people occur annually, mainly among the elderly in western Japan.

Effect of vaccination

Immunity in the body can prevent and alleviate the symptoms of Japanese encephalitis infection, which is distributed throughout Japan except for some areas such as Hokkaido.
It is said that it is desirable to inoculate twice for the first time (with an interval of 6 to 28 days) and once for the additional inoculation (after the completion of the first two inoculations, approximately one year later). After completing the 1st term 3 times, a booster vaccination will be given as the 2nd term.

About side reactions

Within 3 days after inoculation, 18.7% of fever, 11.4% of cough, 9.8% of runny nose, and 8.9% of redness and swelling at the inoculation site are observed.
