pneumococcus in the elderly

Information on vaccination against pneumococcus in the elderly

Those who wish to receive the vaccination should understand the effects of vaccination, side reactions, and precautions before receiving the vaccination. Those who have been vaccinated against Streptococcus pneumoniae even once
in the past are not eligible .

What is Streptococcus pneumoniae infection?

Streptococcus pneumoniae infection is a disease caused by a bacterium called Streptococcus pneumoniae. This bacterium is mainly contained in the secretions of the respiratory tract and is transmitted by droplets through saliva. It is said that about 3 to 5% of Japanese elderly people have bacteria resident in the back of their nose and throat. The development of these bacteria for some reason can cause serious complications such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and sepsis.

Effect of vaccination

There are 93 types of serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae, and “Pneumobacs NP (23-valent pneumococcal capsule polysaccharide vaccine)” used in regular inoculation is effective for 23 types of serotypes. In addition, there is a research result that these 23 serotypes account for about 70% of the causes of severe pneumococcal infection in adults. This is said to account for about 20% of all pneumonia.

About side reactions

Local pain, warmth, swelling, and redness are observed in more than 5% of those who have been vaccinated. In addition, slight muscle pain, malaise, discomfort, chills, headache, and fever may be observed, but the symptoms are mild and disappear in about 2 to 3 days.
Significant side reactions include anaphylaxis-like reactions, thrombocytopenia, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and cellulitis-like reactions. However, although the pneumococcal vaccine has been used in Japan for more than 20 years, the frequency of local reactions has been reported to be high, but no major safety issues have been observed.
