polio vaccination

Information on polio vaccination

Polio vaccination is a vaccination that prevents pediatric paralysis caused by poliovirus infection.
In Japan, no infection from wild strain virus has been reported since 1994, but those who have not completed inoculation may spread the infection due to the virus import from countries where polio is endemic. Be sure to inoculate.

Please be careful* Polio vaccine is included in DPT-IPV (diphtheria-perniform), so in many cases it is not necessary to inoculate polio alone. Polio vaccination is mainly for children who have been vaccinated against DPT (DPT vaccine) and have not been vaccinated against polio.

Polio symptoms

Polio infection is transmitted by the invasion of the virus excreted in human feces, either orally or through the pharynx. The incubation period is 4-35 days.
Most people have no symptoms, but about 5% to 10% have mild upper respiratory tract inflammation or gastroenteritis symptoms called summer cold syndrome, which are prevalent in the summer.
One in 1,000 to 2,000 infected people is paralyzed, and some remain paralyzed forever.

Effect of vaccination

Immunity in the body can prevent polio infection. Inoculation will be completed by inoculating 3 times in the first term and giving 1 additional inoculation.
* The number of inoculations varies depending on the past inoculation history.

About side reactions

The main side reactions are redness and swelling at the inoculation site, and fever and somnolence are seen as side reactions other than the inoculation site. In addition, convulsions, shock, and anaphylaxis-like symptoms may occur as rare and severe side reactions.

Number of inoculations

* The number of inoculations varies depending on the past inoculation history.

  1. If you have not been vaccinated with polio vaccine even once
→ Please inoculate DPT-IPV (diphtheria mixed) vaccine or inactivated polio vaccine 4 times in total
  2. If you are vaccinated with live polio vaccine once
→ Please inoculate DPT-IPV (diphtheria mixed) vaccine or inactivated polio vaccine 3 times in total.
  3. If you have been vaccinated with inactivated polio vaccine 1 to 3 times
→ Inoculate the remaining number of times with DPT-IPV (four-kind mixture) vaccine or inactivated polio vaccine so that the total is 4 times.
  4. If you have been vaccinated twice with live polio vaccine
→ You do not need to be vaccinated with DPT-IPV (diphtheria) vaccine or inactivated polio vaccine.

Precautions for inoculation

As a general rule, vaccinations should be given on a good day. If your child is not in good health, consult your doctor before deciding whether or not to inoculate.
In addition, you cannot be vaccinated in the following cases.

  1. If you have a clear fever (usually above 37.5 degrees)
  2. When it is clear that you have a serious acute illness
  3. If you have had anaphylaxis due to the components of the vaccination solution you should receive
  4. If you have a disease with apparently abnormal immune function or if you are receiving treatment that causes immunosuppression
  5. In addition, when the doctor determines that the condition is inappropriate

General precautions after vaccination

  1. Observe your child at a medical institution or get in touch with your doctor for 30 minutes after vaccination. Sudden side reactions may occur during this time.
  2. Watch out for side reactions for a week after inoculation.
  3. Keep the inoculation site clean. You can take a bath, but do not rub the inoculation site.
  4. Avoid strenuous exercise on the day of inoculation.
  5. If you experience any abnormal reactions or changes in your physical condition at the site of inoculation after inoculation, see a doctor immediately.
