BCG vaccination

Information on BCG vaccination

BCG vaccination is a live vaccine made by attenuating bovine tuberculosis bacteria and aims to prevent tuberculosis.
The inoculation method is a stamp method such as the tube needle method, which is pressed against two places on the upper arm to inoculate. Since the tube needle has 9 needles, you can see a total of 18 needle puncture marks. Tuberculin reaction test is not currently performed.
After inoculation, please dry in the shade. It will dry in about 10 minutes. You can take a bath on the day of inoculation, but do not rub or scratch the inoculated area.
Get BCG by the age of 5 months to prevent severe childhood tuberculosis. You can take it at the same time as the 4-month-old child health checkup (conducted at the age of 5 months).
With BCG, a phenomenon called the Koch phenomenon may occur within 3 days after inoculation.
If you suspect the Koch phenomenon, please contact the Infectious Disease Control Division of the Health Center.
About the Koch phenomenon

Tuberculosis symptoms

Tuberculosis is caused by airborne or droplet infection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Since more than 17,000 cases occur every year in Japan, it is not uncommon for adults to be transmitted to children.
Newborn babies are also worried because they cannot get resistance to tuberculosis from their mothers.
When Mycobacterium tuberculosis spreads in the body, it causes pulmonary tuberculosis, tuberculous meningitis, miliary tuberculosis, pleurisy, bone / joint tuberculosis, renal tuberculosis, etc. Of these, pulmonary tuberculosis is the most common, accounting for about 80% of tuberculosis patients.
Infants are less resistant to tuberculosis and may develop systemic tuberculosis or tuberculous meningitis, which can have severe sequelae.

Effect of vaccination

Vaccination can prevent the onset of tuberculosis to about a quarter of what it would have been without vaccination.
Also, if you are vaccinated, you may be able to reduce the symptoms after the onset of illness.

About side reactions

About 10 days after inoculation, red spots may form locally on the inoculation and small pus may form in some areas. This reaction is strongest about 4 weeks after inoculation, but after that, a scab is formed and heals spontaneously about 3 months after inoculation, leaving only small scars. This is evidence of immunization from BCG vaccination, not an abnormal reaction. It will heal naturally, so don’t wear bandages or bangs and keep it clean. However, if you feel that the vaccination is still jerky even after 3 months, please consult your doctor.
In rare cases, the lymph nodes under the armpit on the side of the inoculation may swell. It’s okay to look at it normally, but sometimes it’s sore, it’s very big swelling, and in rare cases it’s suppurated and spontaneously swells to produce pus. In that case, please consult your family doctor.

About the Koch phenomenon

Within 7 days after inoculation, redness / swelling at the inoculation site and suppuration at the inoculation site may occur. This is called the Koch phenomenon (suspicion of the Koch phenomenon).
The Koch phenomenon can occur if your child has had tuberculosis.
If you suspect that the Koch phenomenon is occurring, please contact the Infectious Disease Control Division of the Health Center.

  1. If you have a clear fever (usually above 37.5 degrees)
  2. When it is clear that you have a serious acute illness
  3. If you have had anaphylaxis due to the components of the vaccination solution you should receive
  4. If you have a disease with apparently abnormal immune function or if you are receiving treatment that causes immunosuppression
  5. In addition, when the doctor determines that the condition is inappropriate

General precautions after vaccination

  1. Observe your child at a medical institution or get in touch with your doctor for 30 minutes after vaccination. Sudden side reactions may occur during this time.

  3. Keep the inoculation site clean. You can take a bath, but do not rub the inoculation site.
  4. Avoid strenuous exercise on the day of inoculation.
