chickenpox vaccination

Information on chickenpox vaccination

From October 1, 2014, the varicella vaccine became a regular vaccination based on the Vaccination Law.
Chickenpox vaccination is a live vaccine that reduces the virulence of the chickenpox virus. You can inoculate from 1 year old, and you will be inoculated twice.
Those who have had chickenpox before are not eligible.

Symptoms of chickenpox

Chickenpox is the so-called “chickenpox”, a rash disease caused by a virus called varicella-zoster virus. It spreads by airborne infection, droplet infection, and contact infection, and its incubation period is said to be about 2 weeks after infection. Fever is present before the onset of the rash, and in typical cases, the rash begins with erythema (redness of the skin surface), blisters, pustules (blisters containing viscous fluid), and crusting. It is said to heal by (becoming a scab). Some have become more severe, and according to recent statistics, it is estimated that about 1 million chickenpox develops annually in Japan, about 4,000 are hospitalized, and about 20 die.
Chickenpox is a predominantly childhood illness, with more than 90% of cases under 9 years of age. Severity in children is due to complications such as febrile convulsions, pneumonia, and bronchitis. Chickenpox is rarely seen in adults, but when chickenpox develops in adults, it is said that there is a high risk that chickenpox itself will become severe.

Effect of vaccination

Currently, a live attenuated varicella vaccine (hereinafter referred to as varicella vaccine) is used in Japan. It is believed that a single vaccination with the varicella vaccine can prevent almost 100% of severe chickenpox, and two vaccinations can prevent the onset of chickenpox, including mild chickenpox.
In addition, it is said that if you come into contact with chickenpox patients, you can prevent the onset by vaccination within 3 days.

About side reactions

There are few side reactions, but sometimes fever and rash are seen, and rarely local redness, swelling, and induration are seen.
Rarely reported serious side reactions include anaphylaxis-like symptoms and acute thrombocytopenic purpura.
